The hot surface igniter is the component that glows white-hot to ignite the gas as it leaves the burners on each heat call. It is the single most replaced wear part in a modern furnace because the element is brittle and degrades with every cycle. When it fails you will get the inducer and gas valve sequencing normally but no flame, the furnace locking out after several ignition retries, cold air from the vents, or a cracked, blistered, or visibly broken igniter element.
