The pressure switch is a combustion safety device that verifies your furnace's draft inducer motor is pulling enough air to safely vent flue gases before the control board permits the gas valve to open and the igniter to fire. It senses negative pressure in the vent system through a small rubber hose; when airflow is correct its contacts close and the ignition sequence continues. When the switch fails or its hose clogs, the furnace will typically light briefly and then shut down, short-cycle, or refuse to ignite at all — you'll often hear the inducer motor spin up and then the unit lock out with no heat.
