The hot surface igniter is the component that lights the gas at the burners each time your furnace calls for heat. On an ignition cycle the control board sends voltage to the igniter, which glows red-hot (around 2,000°F) so that when the gas valve opens the burners light immediately. When the igniter cracks or its element ages, you'll notice the furnace trying to start — the inducer runs and you hear the gas valve click — but you get no flame and the blower never delivers warm air, often followed by a lockout after several failed attempts. A weak igniter that glows but no longer reaches full temperature causes intermittent no-heat calls, usually worse on the coldest mornings. Specs: This is a 120V hot surface igniter.
