The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and proves to the control board that a flame is actually present after ignition. It works on flame rectification: the flame conducts a tiny microamp current, and if the board doesn't see that current within a few seconds of the gas valve opening, it shuts the gas off as a safety measure. When the sensor's rod becomes coated with oxide or carbon, that current drops below threshold — so the classic symptom is a furnace that lights normally, runs for 3–7 seconds, then shuts the flame off and tries again, short-cycling repeatedly and eventually locking out with no heat. A healthy sensor should pass a small flame-sense current, typically in the 1–6 microamp range (read in series with a multimeter set to DC microamps); below roughly 1 µA the board will fault.
