The hot surface igniter (HSI) is what lights your gas burners. At the start of every heat cycle the control board energizes the element until it glows red-hot — around 2,000°F — so the incoming gas ignites. These elements are brittle and degrade with every thermal cycle, eventually developing hairline cracks. When the igniter cracks or burns open it stops glowing, the gas never lights, and the furnace runs its inducer, tries to ignite three times, then drops into lockout. The homeowner's symptom is simple: the blower may run but there is no heat, often with a fault code at the board. You may briefly smell unburned gas before the valve closes.
