Your furnace's flame sensor is the safety device that proves the burners actually lit. When that rod becomes coated with carbon, oxidation, or scale, it can no longer conduct a clean signal — so the board assumes there is no flame and closes the gas valve within 2 to 7 seconds. The classic symptom is a furnace that lights, runs briefly, then shuts off and retries (short-cycling). After three or four failed attempts it drops into hard lockout, leaving you with no heat and a blinking fault code at the control board. A healthy flame sensor produces a steady flame current, typically 1 to 6 microamps DC, with most systems wanting more than 2 µA for reliable operation.
