The hot surface igniter (HSI) is the component that lights your gas burners on every call for heat. The control board sends voltage through the element until it glows red-hot — roughly 2,000°F — igniting the gas as the valve opens. Because the element heats and cools on every cycle, it grows brittle and eventually cracks or burns through. Once it does, it can no longer glow, the gas never lights, and the furnace runs its inducer, attempts ignition three times, then drops into lockout.
