The flame sensor is the small metal rod that tells your furnace's control board the burners are genuinely lit. It works by flame rectification: seated in the live flame, the rod conducts a minute DC current back to the board to confirm combustion. Over time the rod picks up carbon, oxidation, and scale that insulate it, so the signal weakens or disappears. The board then reads 'no flame' and closes the gas valve within a few seconds — a safety response, not a failure of the gas valve itself.
