The hot surface igniter is the small element that glows white-hot to light the burners each time your furnace calls for heat. When it cracks or wears out, the most common symptom is no heat: the inducer runs, the gas valve clicks, but the burners never light and the furnace locks out after three or four tries. A failing igniter may glow dimly, glow but fail to ignite, or show visible cracks and white spots on the element. This igniter matches the original Carrier element material and resistance. Most Carrier furnaces use a silicon nitride igniter — more durable and warm-up-tolerant than older silicon carbide elements — with a cold resistance typically in the 40–75 ohm range. Check yours with a multimeter; an open (infinite) reading means it's done. The mounting bracket, connector, and gas-train clearance all match the OEM part so the burners and flame sensor stay in spec. Igniters live or die by their resistance and material. A generic element with the wrong resistance won't reach ignition temperature — it either glows too cool to light the gas or runs so hot it burns out within a season.
