The hot surface igniter (HSI) is what lights the burners every time your furnace calls for heat. When the thermostat triggers a heat cycle, the control board sends 120V to the igniter, it glows white-hot, and the gas valve opens to ignite the burners against it. A failed igniter is one of the most common no-heat callouts: you'll hear the inducer motor spin up and the gas valve click, but no flame follows, the blower pushes cold air, and the furnace locks out after a few failed attempts.
