The pressure switch is your furnace's primary venting safety sensor. It monitors the negative pressure created by the inducer draft motor and confirms combustion gases are being safely exhausted before the control board will energize the hot surface igniter and open the gas valve. When this switch fails, or its rubber sensing tube cracks or clogs with condensate, the furnace typically lights briefly then short-cycles, or never ignites at all. Homeowners usually notice the inducer and blower running with no heat, repeated clicking at the gas valve, and a flashing fault code on the control board pointing to an open pressure switch. A stuck-closed switch is more dangerous, because it can permit ignition before the flue is verified clear. This is a normally-open differential pressure switch calibrated to a precise set-point (commonly in the -0.40 to -0.85 in. W.C. range for single-stage models). The OEM switch is matched to your furnace's inducer airflow and vent length, with set-point tolerance held tight (±0.05 in.
