The hot surface igniter glows red-hot to ignite the gas at the burners on every heat call — it is the single most common wear part in a modern furnace. When it fails, you get no heat: the blower runs cold, the inducer spins and you may hear the gas valve click, but no flame establishes. A weakening igniter glows dimly or unevenly and can't reach ignition temperature, leading the control board to retry and then lock out.
