The condenser fan motor spins the outdoor fan that pulls air across the condenser coil, rejecting the heat your system removes from the house. When it fails you'll hear a loud hum or grinding from the outdoor unit with the blade not turning, notice the fan starting slowly or stopping while running, feel the top of the cabinet getting very hot, or watch the compressor trip on high-pressure or overload because the heat has nowhere to go. A motor that's hot to the touch or smells burnt is on its way out. This is a 1/4 HP class motor, 208/230V single-phase, typically 825 or 1075 RPM, reversible rotation, paired with a matched run capacitor (often 5 MFD). OEM motors use sealed ball or sleeve bearings rated for outdoor weatherproof duty, the correct 1/2" shaft diameter, and the correct rotation (CW/CCW viewed from the shaft end). Match HP, voltage, RPM, rotation, and capacitor µF before ordering. Generic "universal" condenser motors often use undersized bearings and lower-temperature insulation, and a mismatched RPM or rotation moves the wrong CFM — overheating the compressor and pitting the contactor contacts.
