The run capacitor is the energy-storage component that gives your Carrier condenser's compressor and outdoor fan motor the phase-shifted jolt they need to start and the steady torque to keep running. When it weakens or fails the symptoms are unmistakable: the outdoor unit hums but the fan won't spin, the compressor tries to start and trips the breaker, the system short-cycles, or you feel warm air indoors while the condenser just buzzes. A swollen, domed, or leaking capacitor top is a dead giveaway.
