The hot surface igniter is the glow element that lights the burners on the gas-fired side of your Carrier package unit. On a call for heat it draws current, glows white-hot, and ignites the gas. When it cracks or wears out you get the classic no-heat symptom: the inducer runs and you hear the gas valve click, but the burners never light, the unit locks out after three failed tries, and you're left with cold air from the supply registers. A visibly cracked, chipped, or grey-flaking element has failed even if it still partially glows. Most Carrier units use a silicon nitride igniter — more durable and shock-resistant than older silicon carbide elements — running on 120VAC with a cold resistance typically in the 40–75 ohm range. An open (infinite ohm) reading means it's done. Silicon nitride tolerates thermal cycling far better and reaches ignition temperature faster.
