The flame sensor is the small metal rod that sits in the burner flame and proves to your Carrier furnace's control board that ignition actually occurred. It works by flame rectification — the lit burner passes a tiny microamp DC signal through the flame to ground, and the board uses that current to confirm it is safe to keep the gas valve open. When the sensor's rod becomes coated with oxide and silica scale, that microamp signal drops below the board's threshold. The furnace then lights, runs a few seconds, and shuts the gas off as a safety response. Homeowners see classic short-cycling: the burners ignite, the flame disappears within 2–7 seconds, the cycle repeats several times, and the furnace finally locks out with little or no heat delivered.
