The pressure switch is a safety interlock that proves your Carrier furnace's draft inducer is actually moving combustion air before the board will allow the igniter and gas valve to energize. It is a diaphragm switch connected by a small hose to the inducer housing; when the inducer pulls the correct negative pressure (measured in inches of water column), the diaphragm closes the contacts and the ignition sequence proceeds.
