The hot surface igniter is the glow element that lights the burners in your Carrier furnace. On each heat call the control board sends line voltage to the igniter, it glows orange-hot (roughly 1,800–2,500°F), and the burners ignite as the gas valve opens. Because it is a brittle ceramic element that heats and cools every cycle, it is one of the most common no-heat failures. When it cracks or burns out, the furnace runs its full pre-ignition sequence — inducer spins, pressure switch closes — but the burners never light, you get cold air or no air, and the unit locks out and flashes an ignition-failure code. A visibly cracked element, or one that no longer glows on a heat call, confirms it.
