The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that a flame is actually present after ignition. It works by flame rectification, passing a tiny microamp current through the flame. When the rod oxidizes or cracks, the board can no longer 'see' the flame and shuts the gas off as a safety measure. The classic symptom is a furnace that lights for a few seconds and then shuts down, repeating over and over — short-cycling on every call for heat — leaving you with little or no warm air and, often, a lockout fault after several failed tries. This is a single-rod silicon/stainless flame rod with a ceramic insulator and standard spade or screw terminal. A healthy sensor should pass roughly 2-6 microamps of flame current; anything under about 0.5 microamps will trip the safety. Confirm rod length and bracket orientation against your original.
