The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame and confirms to the furnace control board that ignition actually happened. It works by flame rectification: a tiny microamp current flows through the flame to ground, telling the board it is safe to keep the gas valve open. When the rod oxidizes, carbons over, or cracks, the board can no longer 'see' the flame and shuts the gas off within seconds as a safety response.
