The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame and verifies to the furnace control board that ignition actually occurred. It relies on flame rectification: a small microamp current passes through the flame to ground, signaling the board that it is safe to keep the gas valve open. As the rod oxidizes, carbons over, or cracks with age, the board loses sight of the flame and closes the gas valve within seconds as a built-in safety measure. Homeowners typically see a furnace that ignites for a few seconds then shuts off repeatedly (ignition short-cycling), weak or no heat at the vents, and frequently a hard lockout after three to five failed tries that requires cycling power to reset.
