The flame sensor (a flame-rectification rod) is how your Carrier package unit confirms that the burners actually lit after the igniter fires. The rod sits directly in the flame and passes a tiny microamp current to the control board; the moment that signal disappears, the board closes the gas valve to prevent raw gas from building up. As the rod oxidizes, carbons over, or cracks, the board can no longer "see" the flame — so it lights the burners and then snuffs them out within seconds.
