The contactor is the electrical switch that lets the 24V thermostat signal energize the high-voltage compressor and condenser fan. A coil pulls the contacts closed on a cooling call and lets them open when the call ends. As the contacts pit and burn from arcing, you'll see symptoms like the outdoor unit failing to start, chattering or buzzing from the contactor, the fan and compressor not shutting off after the thermostat is satisfied (welded contacts), or intermittent cooling that comes and goes. Severely burned contacts can also overheat the wiring lugs. This is a 2-pole definite purpose contactor with a 24V coil, typically rated 30–40 FLA per pole at 600V, with quick-connect and box-lug terminals sized for residential condensing units.
