The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that a flame is actually present after the gas valve opens. It works by flame rectification — the lit flame conducts a tiny microamp current to ground. When the sensor gets coated in oxide or carbon, that current drops and the board can no longer 'see' the flame, so it shuts the gas valve within seconds as a safety measure. The classic symptom is a furnace that lights, runs for 3–7 seconds, then shuts off and tries again — short-cycling on ignition, often locking out after three or four failed tries and leaving the home with no heat.
