The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and proves to the control board that a flame is actually present after ignition. It works by flame rectification — the flame conducts a tiny microamp current that tells the board it's safe to keep the gas valve open. When the rod gets coated with oxide buildup or fails, the board can't sense the flame and shuts the gas off within a few seconds. The telltale symptom is a furnace that lights, burns briefly, then shuts down and repeats — short-cycling, intermittent heat, and a flame-sense fault code on the board.
