The flame sensor is a thin metal rod seated in the burner flame that confirms ignition has actually occurred. It works by flame rectification, passing a tiny microamp current through the flame to ground so the control board knows the burners are lit and the gas valve can safely stay open. When the rod becomes coated with oxide or silica, or the sensor itself fails, the board can no longer detect the flame and closes the gas valve within seconds as a safety response.
