The hot surface igniter is the component that physically lights the gas burners in your Carrier furnace. On each heat call, the control board sends line voltage to the igniter, which glows bright orange — hot enough to ignite the gas the instant the valve opens. Igniters are the most common furnace failure point because the element is brittle and degrades with every heating cycle. When it cracks or burns out, the obvious symptom is no heat: the inducer runs, the gas valve clicks, but nothing lights, and after three tries the board locks out.
