The flame sensor is a simple but critical safety device that proves the burner actually lit. After ignition it sits in the flame and conducts a tiny microamp current through flame rectification; the control board reads that current and keeps the gas valve open. When the rod gets coated with oxidation or its signal drops, the board can no longer confirm flame and shuts the gas off — so the classic symptom is a furnace that lights for a few seconds, then shuts down and retries, short-cycling on every call for heat, often three times before a hard lockout. Specs: This is a single-rod stainless flame-sense electrode with a porcelain insulator and a spade or screw terminal. It is not an igniter and carries no resistance spec the way a hot-surface igniter does — what matters is a clean rod and a solid microamp signal. A healthy reading is typically 2–6 µA; below roughly 1 µA the board drops out. The rod length and mounting bracket must match the PY1P burner geometry so the tip sits correctly in the flame.
