The flame sensor is the safety device that confirms your burner actually ignited. Once the burner lights, the rod sits in the flame and passes a tiny microamp current via flame rectification; the control board reads that current and holds the gas valve open. When the rod oxidizes or its signal falls off, the board can no longer prove flame and immediately closes the gas — so the hallmark symptom is a furnace that fires for a few seconds, drops out, and retries, short-cycling on every heat call and often locking out after three failed tries. Specs: This is a single-rod stainless flame-sense electrode with a porcelain insulator and a spade or screw terminal. Unlike a hot-surface igniter, it has no resistance value to test — what matters is a clean rod and a strong microamp signal. A healthy reading is typically 2–6 µA; once it falls below about 1 µA the board will drop out. The rod length and bracket must match the PY1P burner geometry so the tip lands correctly in the flame.
