The flame sensor is a single metal rod mounted at the edge of the burner assembly that confirms a flame is actually present after ignition. It works by flame rectification — a tiny microamp current passes through the flame to the burner ground, telling the control board the burners lit. When the rod fouls with silica or carbon, that current drops and the board can no longer "see" the flame, so it closes the gas valve within seconds as a safety response. Homeowners notice the furnace lighting for a few seconds then shutting off, repeating every couple of minutes (short-cycling), blowing cool air, or locking out entirely with no heat on the coldest nights.
