The hot surface igniter lights the gas burners at the start of every heating cycle. When the thermostat calls for heat, the control board sends 120V to the igniter, which glows orange-hot (roughly 1800–2500°F) to ignite the gas as the valve opens. These igniters are brittle and degrade a little with every thermal cycle.
