It relies on flame rectification — a few microamps of current flow through the flame to ground. Once the rod fouls with oxidation or soot, or its ceramic insulator hairline-cracks, the board loses the flame signal and shuts the gas valve within seconds for safety. Homeowners experience this as relentless short-cycling: the furnace fires, burns for just 3-7 seconds, then quits and tries again, usually hard-locking out after several attempts.
