The contactor is the electrically-controlled switch that sends high-voltage power to the compressor and condenser fan motor whenever the thermostat calls for cooling. Its 24V coil pulls the contacts closed to start the outdoor unit and releases them when the call ends. When it fails, you'll notice the outdoor unit won't start at all (pitted or open contacts), a loud chattering or buzzing from the contactor, contacts that weld shut so the unit runs nonstop and can't shut off, or a burnt smell and visible arcing/blackened terminals. A humming coil that won't pull in is another common symptom. This is a definite purpose contactor. Match the pole count (1-pole or 2-pole), the contact amperage rating (commonly 30A or 40A FLA), and the coil voltage (typically 24V on residential systems) to your original.
