The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that sits in the burner flame and proves to the control board that a flame is actually present after the gas valve opens. When it gets coated with oxide or carbon, it can no longer pass the tiny microamp signal the board needs, so the board shuts the gas off as a safety measure. The classic symptom is a furnace that lights for a few seconds and then shuts down, cycling on and off repeatedly (short-cycling) and never reaching temperature, leaving the home with little or no heat.
