The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms, through flame rectification, that the burners actually lit. If the control board doesn't 'see' that microamp signal within a few seconds of ignition, it shuts the gas valve as a safety measure. As the rod oxidizes, the most common symptom is short-cycling: the burners light, glow for 3–7 seconds, then go out, and the cycle repeats — leaving you with little or no heat and a blower that keeps running cool-down over and over.
