The air pressure switch is a safety device that proves the draft inducer is actually moving combustion gases before the furnace is allowed to ignite. As the inducer spins up it pulls a negative pressure on the switch, closing its contacts and telling the control board it's safe to light the burners. When the switch fails or a vent is blocked the contacts never close — the inducer runs, then the furnace locks out with no ignition, and the diagnostic LED flashes a pressure-switch fault. A switch stuck closed is more dangerous, allowing ignition without proper venting, while a marginal switch causes intermittent short-cycling on cold or windy days. This is a single-stage negative-pressure (normally open) switch with a calibrated set point measured in inches of water column — for example -0.40" WC — printed on the switch body. The replacement must match that set point and port count exactly; a switch with the wrong trip pressure defeats the safety it provides. Verify the set point with a manometer if you suspect a venting issue rather than a bad switch. OEM matters because the trip point is the whole job.
