The hot surface igniter is the glow plug that lights your furnace. On a call for heat the control board sends voltage through the igniter element, which glows white-hot and ignites the gas as the valve opens. Because it heats and cools on every cycle, it's one of the most common furnace failures. When it cracks or burns out you'll get a furnace that runs the inducer, clicks, but never lights — no heat, followed by a lockout. A failing igniter may glow dim orange instead of bright yellow-white, or ignite late with a delayed 'whoomp' as gas accumulates. Modern Carrier furnaces use a silicon nitride igniter, far more rugged and crack-resistant than the older brittle silicon carbide elements. Silicon nitride igniters draw less current and last longer, but they are still fragile ceramic — never touch the element with bare fingers, as skin oils create hot spots that shorten its life. A healthy igniter reads a measurable resistance across its terminals (check the spec for your exact model); an open, infinite-ohms reading on a multimeter confirms a cracked element. A generic igniter with the wrong resistance may not reach ignition temperature, causing repeated failed starts, or it may draw excess current and burn out prematurely.
