The hot surface igniter is the spark-free heart of ignition in your Carrier PY1PEB package unit. On a call for heat the control board sends line voltage to the igniter, which glows white-hot in seconds; once it reaches temperature the gas valve opens and the burners light off the glowing element. When the igniter cracks, erodes, or drifts out of resistance spec, you get no heat even though the inducer runs — often a faint clicking, no visible glow, and an ignition-lockout fault after three or four failed tries. A hairline crack you can barely see is enough to stop it glowing. Material and resistance define this part.
