The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame and confirms to the furnace control board that a flame is actually present after the igniter fires. It works through flame rectification — the hot flame conducts a tiny microamp current that tells the board to keep the gas valve open. Over time the rod develops a silica and oxide coating from combustion byproducts, the signal weakens, and the board can no longer "see" the flame. When that happens you'll notice the burners light for a few seconds and then shut off, the furnace short-cycles, you get intermittent no-heat, or the unit goes into a hard lockout after three or four failed attempts and won't restart until it's reset.
