The pressure switch is the furnace's safety referee for combustion airflow. Before the control board ever allows ignition, it energizes the inducer motor and waits for this switch to close, confirming that exhaust gases are actually being drawn through the heat exchanger and out the vent. If the switch can't sense adequate negative pressure, ignition is blocked. Homeowners typically notice the inducer fan spinning up but the burners never lighting, a flashing fault code for an open or stuck pressure switch, and no heat at all — often followed by a hard lockout. A blocked vent, condensate in the sensing tube, or a tired diaphragm are the usual culprits. This switch is rated to a specific trip and reset point measured in inches of water column (for example, around -0.40" WC), with an SPST contact set and a color-coded hose port matched to the Carrier draft system. Some configurations use a dual switch for high/low stages. The WC setpoint printed on the body must match the furnace specification exactly. OEM matters because pressure-switch calibration is not generic. A switch with the wrong WC setpoint will either nuisance-trip and lock the furnace out on cold days, or — worse — close too early and permit ignition without proven draft.
