The flame sensor is the small metal rod positioned directly in the burner flame, and its job is flame rectification: it sends a tiny electrical current back to the control board to prove the burners actually lit. When the rod gets coated with carbon and oxide or the ceramic insulator cracks, that current drops below the board's threshold. The classic symptom is a furnace that ignites for three to ten seconds, then snaps the burners off and short-cycles repeatedly — sometimes locking out entirely after three or four tries — leaving you with cold air from the registers even though you can hear the unit trying to fire. This is a single-rod sensor built around a high-temperature ceramic insulator and a Kanthal/stainless steel sensing element. In healthy operation it generates a microamp flame-rectification signal, typically in the 1–6 µA range, read with a multimeter placed in series on the sensor lead. The rod length and tip position are engineered to sit in the hottest, most stable part of the Carrier burner flame.
