The flame sensor is the slender metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame and proves to the control board that the furnace actually lit. It works by flame rectification, passing a microamp current through the ionized flame back to the board. As the rod accumulates carbon and oxide or the ceramic insulator develops a hairline crack, that signal falls below the board's minimum and the furnace assumes there is no flame. The telltale symptom is burners that ignite for a few seconds and then shut off, repeated short-cycling, and ultimately a lockout — so the blower may run but the house never warms up. This sensor uses a high-temperature ceramic insulator and a stainless steel/Kanthal sensing rod. A properly seated sensor produces a steady flame-rectification signal in the 1–6 µA range, measured by placing a multimeter in series on the sensor wire. The rod length and tip angle are designed to rest in the hottest, most stable zone of the Carrier burner. OEM matters because rod alloy, length, and insulator temperature rating are tuned to this furnace. Aftermarket sensors frequently use a different metal or geometry that yields a weak, drifting signal — the source of frustrating intermittent lockouts — and lower-grade ceramic that fractures under thermal cycling and shorts to ground.
