The defrost control board is the brain of your outdoor unit. On a heat pump it sequences the compressor contactor, the reversing valve, and the outdoor fan, and — using input from the defrost thermostat and an interval timer — it decides when to run a defrost cycle to melt frost off the outdoor coil. When the board fails, you may get no heating or no cooling at all, a unit that won't start, a coil that ices over and never clears, short-cycling, or a system that runs constantly. Scorched relay contacts, audible relay chatter, or no response to a thermostat call are classic signs. This OEM board carries the full relay complement for the unit — compressor/contactor, outdoor fan, and reversing valve — plus selectable defrost interval pins (commonly 30/60/90-minute jumper settings). It must match Carrier's reversing-valve logic (O vs. B energizing) and the unit's wiring harness for correct operation. Generic or 'universal' boards are risky here: relay current ratings and control logic must match exactly. A mismatched board can mis-sequence the reversing valve (heating and cooling reversed), run the wrong defrost timing so the coil ices, or use underrated relays that fail early.
