The refrigerant pressure switch is a safety control that watches system pressure and opens the control circuit to shut the compressor down before damaging pressure conditions occur. Carrier package units use low-pressure switches (loss-of-charge / freeze protection) and high-pressure switches (overpressure protection). When a switch fails or trips, homeowner symptoms include: the unit won't start at all, it locks out after a few minutes, short-cycles, won't run on cold mornings, or trips intermittently on hot afternoons — all while the thermostat keeps calling. This OEM switch is matched to your unit's cut-out and cut-in pressures and reset type — for example a low-pressure switch with set points around 20–25 PSI cut-out / 40–50 PSI cut-in, in an auto-reset configuration, with the correct Schrader/quick-connect fitting and normally-open or normally-closed wiring. The trip pressures and fitting must match the original exactly. OEM matters because the trip points are the whole job. A generic switch with the wrong cut-out pressure either nuisance-trips a healthy system or — worse — fails to open and lets the compressor run into a slugging or overheating condition that the switch exists to prevent. Most Carrier pressure switches thread onto a Schrader valve, so the refrigerant charge is sealed and no recovery is needed.
