The refrigerant pressure switch is a protective control that senses system pressure and breaks the compressor control circuit before an unsafe high- or low-pressure condition can damage the compressor in your Carrier package unit. Loss-of-charge and freeze conditions trip the low-pressure switch; a blocked condenser or overcharge trips the high-pressure switch. When the switch fails or trips, the symptoms a homeowner sees are: no cooling, the unit starting then locking out, short-cycling, failure to start on a cold morning, or intermittent nuisance trips on the hottest part of the day while the thermostat is still calling. This OEM switch is matched to the exact cut-out and cut-in pressures and reset style for your unit — for instance a low-pressure switch set near 20–25 PSI cut-out / 40–50 PSI cut-in, auto-reset, with the correct Schrader/quick-connect fitting and normally-open or normally-closed contacts. Pressure set points and fitting type must match the original. OEM matters because the calibrated trip pressures are the entire function of the part.
