The contactor is the high-voltage relay that switches power to the compressor and condenser fan when the thermostat calls for cooling. Its 24V coil pulls the contacts closed and line voltage then flows to the outdoor unit. When a contactor fails you'll often hear a loud buzzing or chattering at the outdoor unit, find the fan and compressor dead even though the thermostat is calling, or, when the contacts weld shut, a unit that won't shut off. Pitted, blackened, or melted contacts and a buzzing coil are the visible signs. Ants and debris jamming the plunger are surprisingly common causes. This is a definite-purpose contactor. Match it on three things: pole count (1- or 2-pole), contact amperage rating (commonly 30A or 40A FLA for this class), and coil voltage (24V on residential equipment). The contacts must be rated above the compressor's running and inrush amps. OEM matters because a contactor lives or dies by its contact material and surface area. Undersized or low-grade aftermarket contacts pit and arc faster, raising resistance until they overheat, weld, or chatter, and a welded contactor runs the compressor continuously, which can destroy it.
