The control transformer steps your Carrier Performance 13 heat pump's incoming line voltage down to the 24VAC that powers the thermostat, contactor coil, reversing-valve solenoid, and control board logic. Essentially everything low-voltage in the system depends on it. When a transformer fails — usually an open primary or secondary winding, or a shorted turn — the entire control circuit goes dead: a blank thermostat, a contactor that never pulls in, no compressor or fan response, and a system that simply does nothing when you call for heat or cool.
