The pressure switch is a safety device that monitors refrigerant pressure in your Carrier heat pump and opens the control circuit if pressure climbs too high (high-pressure switch) or drops too low (low-pressure switch). It protects the compressor from running under dangerous conditions such as a blocked condenser coil, a lost charge, or a dead outdoor fan. When it trips or fails, you'll see short-cycling (the unit starts then shuts down after a few seconds or minutes), no heating or cooling despite the thermostat calling, or a system that won't start at all. A switch stuck open locks the unit out; one stuck closed removes the protection entirely and exposes the compressor to damage. Specs: Pressure switches are defined by their cut-out and cut-in setpoints in PSIG and whether they are normally-open or normally-closed. Typical high-pressure switches cut out near 400–450 PSIG; low-pressure switches near 20–50 PSIG. Match the setpoints, the connection (1/4" SAE flare or solder), and the electrical configuration to your original.
