The contactor is the electrically-controlled switch that energizes your Carrier condenser's compressor and outdoor fan motor every time the thermostat calls for cooling. A 24V signal from the control board pulls in the contactor coil, closing the high-voltage contacts that feed 240V line power to the compressor.
