The control transformer is the heart of your Carrier package unit's low-voltage circuit. It steps the incoming 208/240V line voltage down to the 24V control signal that powers your thermostat, the contactor coil, the defrost board, and the reversing-valve solenoid. When this transformer fails, the entire control system goes dark: your thermostat screen may go blank, the system stops responding when you call for heat or cool, and the compressor and fan never engage even though line power is clearly reaching the unit. A failing transformer sometimes emits a faint buzz before dying, or repeatedly blows the low-voltage fuse on the control board. This is a 40 VA Class 2 transformer with a 208/240V primary and a 24V secondary, foot-mounted to the unit's control panel. The OEM windings and laminated core are rated for the continuous duty of driving multiple 24V loads simultaneously without overheating. Why OEM matters here: generic transformers are frequently built with undersized VA ratings and thinner insulation. When asked to power the contactor coil, board, and reversing valve at once, an underrated unit runs hot, sags its secondary voltage below 24V, and causes intermittent contactor chatter and premature failure.
